The Museum as Hub initiative supports art activities and experimentation; explores artistic, curatorial, and institutional practice; and serves as an important resource for the public to learn about contemporary art from around the world. Both a physical site and an expanding network of international art spaces, initiatives, and artists, the Museum as Hub investigates the potential for mediation and exchange through residencies, exhibitions, and public programs. The Museum as Hub active partners include: art space pool, Seoul; Beirut, Cairo; de_sitio, Mexico City; Inhotim, Brumadinho, Brazil; Pérez Art Museum Miami; Townhouse Gallery, Cairo; and the Van Abbemuseum, Eindhoven.

  • Exhibitions that have presented important art and ideas from around the world. These have been organized by the New Museum and Hub partners, as well as a growing network of international spaces and initiatives that includes the Beirut Art Center, Bidoun, and the Center for Historical Re-enactments in Johannesburg.
  • Public programs, including the signature series Propositions, a seminar that invites an artist, curator, or thinker to explore an idea currently in development.
  • Residencies with artists and art spaces that facilitate new projects and long-term, in-depth relationships with participants. Residencies have culminated variously in publications, public discussions and performances, and new installations.
  • Art Spaces Directory, which is available both online as an interactive map and offline in the Art Spaces Directory book.
  • Digital Initiatives, which build on the knowledge-sharing and research aspects of the Hub. View our ongoing editorial on international projects on our Six Degrees blog and online art through First Look.
